Wallpaper changes a room in a day, costs a fraction of panelling, and does things paint simply cannot — pattern, texture, and covering minor surface imperfections. Which Material for Which Room

No wallpaper survives a damp wall. Rising damp, a roof leak or a shared bathroom wall will lift any wallpaper regardless of price — usually within one monsoon. Fix the source of moisture first. If the wall has a history of damp, we will say so at the survey rather than take the order and watch it fail.

How Many Rolls? The Maths Nobody Explains

Wallpaper is sold by the roll, but you use it in drops — full-height strips. Part-used drops are waste, which is why square-foot maths misleads people:

Then add for the pattern repeat. To line a pattern up across a seam, the installer cuts away part of each drop. A plain or random-match design wastes almost nothing. A large repeat can add 15–20% to the roll count. This is the single most common reason a job runs short.

Buy the whole quantity in one order. Wallpaper is printed in batches and shades vary slightly between them. A roll bought later, from a different batch, will be visibly different on the wall in daylight — and it always shows on the most prominent seam. Order one spare roll and keep it for repairs.

Wall Preparation — Where Jobs Are Won or Lost

The wallpaper is only as well attached as the surface beneath it. Flaking, chalky or powdery paint must be removed, not papered over
Glossy paint needs keying with a light sand, or the adhesive has nothing to grip
Fresh plaster must cure — usually several weeks — before anything is hung on it
Porous or patchy walls need priming or sizing so the adhesive does not dry unevenly and cause lifting
Fill and sand holes and cracks — thin wallpapers telegraph every imperfection, especially in raking light

For real physical depth rather than printed pattern, compare wall panels and decorative panels — they cost more but hide a damaged wall completely.

What Determines the Price

Material — paper-based at the bottom, imported textile and fabric-backed at the top
Pattern repeat — a large repeat means more rolls for the same wall. It is a real cost, not a technicality
Roll size — wide-format rolls cover more per roll and often work out better on large walls
Wall preparation — stripping old paper, filling and priming. The item most often missing from a cheap quote
Wall condition and height — double-height walls and stairwells need access equipment
Installation — pattern matching around windows, corners and switches is skilled, slow work

Where to spend: material grade and wall preparation. Both are invisible in a showroom and both decide whether the paper is still tight at the seams in year five. Where to save: choose a smaller pattern repeat — it can cut the roll count noticeably with no visible compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

Measure the wall width and height, and work in drops rather than square feet. A standard 53 cm by 10 m roll gives four drops on a wall up to about 2.4 m high, so it covers roughly 2.1 m of wall width. Divide your wall width by that and round up. Then add for the pattern repeat, because aligning a pattern across seams means cutting away part of each drop — a large repeat can add 15 to 20 percent. Always buy the full quantity in one go so every roll is from the same batch.

Which wallpaper is best for Indian humidity?

Vinyl or PVC wallpaper. It has a plastic surface that tolerates moisture and can be wiped clean, which matters in kitchens, bathrooms, coastal cities and anywhere with monsoon damp. Paper-based wallpaper looks beautiful but absorbs moisture, and in a humid room it will lift at the seams within a season or two. What no wallpaper can survive is rising damp or a leak in the wall itself — fix the source first, or the paper will fail no matter what you spend.

Can wallpaper be applied over painted walls?

Yes, provided the paint is sound and firmly bonded. Any flaking, chalky or powdery paint must come off first, because the wallpaper will only ever be as well attached as the surface under it. How long does wallpaper last?

Vinyl wallpaper in a normal room commonly lasts eight to twelve years, and often longer in a low-traffic space such as a bedroom. Paper-based wallpaper in a humid or high-traffic area may only manage three to five. What ends its life is usually not the wallpaper itself but the wall behind it, seams in a damp room, or sunlight fading the pattern on a wall that gets direct light every afternoon.

Is wallpaper cheaper than painting?

Per square foot, good paint is usually cheaper to apply than good wallpaper. Over ten years the gap narrows, because paint in a busy room is typically redone every three to five years while quality vinyl wallpaper keeps going.
