Foam is what you use when the surface matters. It is soft enough to sit directly against polished furniture, glass or a painted appliance without scratching or embossing, which is exactly where bubble sheet fails. It also fills voids so items cannot move — and movement, not crushing, causes most transit damage.

Choosing Thickness and Density

Density matters as much as thickness. A thick low-density foam compresses flat under load and stops protecting; a thinner higher-density foam often performs better and takes less space in the carton. If your goods are heavy or stacked in transit, ask about density rather than simply ordering thicker foam.
Fabricated Foam
Beyond plain rolls, foam is commonly supplied as:

What Determines the Price of Foam Sheet

- Thickness — you are buying material volume, so this dominates
- Density — a higher density foam at the same thickness costs more and protects more
- Roll width — standard widths cost less than cut-to-width, which carries conversion cost
- Quantity — the main lever; bulk and repeat supply rates sit well below single-roll pricing
- Grade — anti-static and laminated variants are a premium over standard white
- Fabrication — pouches, profiles and especially die-cut inserts are priced as conversion work and carry minimum quantities
- Colour — white is the value option; specific colours may carry a minimum
Where buyers overspend: ordering thicker foam to solve a problem that is actually density or void fill. A snug pack with 3 mm high-density foam usually outperforms a loose pack with 10 mm soft foam, and costs less per unit shipped.

Which is better for packing, foam or bubble?
They do different jobs. Foam protects surfaces and bubble protects against impact. If your goods arrive scratched or marked you need foam; if they arrive broken you need bubble. The best packs use foam directly against the product and bubble around the outside - and for anything with a polished or painted show surface, bubble alone can emboss the finish under pressure or heat.
What thickness of foam sheet do I need?
