Tape is the cheapest thing in your pack and the most expensive thing to get wrong. A carton that opens in transit costs you the goods, the freight and the customer. Two numbers decide whether that happens — micron, the film thickness, and length, which is where this trade is least honest. Both are worth understanding before you compare quotes.

Two Things the Tape Trade Does Not Advertise
1. Short rolls. A roll sold as 100 m may contain considerably less, and since nobody measures tape, it is the easiest place in packaging to quietly cut cost. If a quote looks unusually cheap per roll, work out the price per metre instead — and measure a roll from a new supplier once. We state actual length, and we would rather you checked it than assumed it.
2. Thin film at headline prices. Micron is the other lever. A very thin tape sticks acceptably in a cool store and releases on a carton sitting in an un-air-conditioned warehouse in June, and it also splits and slivers as you pull it off the roll, slowing every pack. Specify micron and compare like with like.
Compare on price per metre at a stated micron. That single habit makes tape quotes comparable and removes both tricks at once. It is also the number that matters to your cost per carton, which is what you actually care about.

Applying It Properly
- Use an H-seal on anything heavy — along the centre seam and across both end seams. A single strip down the middle is not a seal, it is a suggestion
- Overlap onto the box sides by a few centimetres each end so the tape grips the panel, not just the flap edge
- Press it down. Adhesive needs contact pressure to bond; tape laid on without pressure peels back at the ends
- Use a dispenser. Faster, straighter, less waste, and it applies pressure as it runs — it pays for itself in a week of despatch
- Keep cartons clean and dry. Dust and damp are the usual reason tape "did not stick" — the tape was fine, the surface was not
- Store rolls out of heat and sun. Adhesive degrades in a hot store, so old stock in a warm corner fails even at a good micron

What Determines the Price of Packaging Tape
Quoted at current rates, as tape tracks polymer and adhesive input costs. The drivers:
- Micron — the biggest factor; film thickness plus adhesive quantity is essentially what you are buying
- Roll length — the number to verify. Always compare price per metre rather than price per roll
- Width — priced by material area, so 72 mm costs more per metre than 48 mm
- Adhesive type — hot-melt grades with higher initial grab cost more than standard acrylic
- Printing — branded tape adds cost and carries a minimum order quantity and lead time
- Quantity — the main lever; tape is bought by the box or carton and rates improve sharply with volume
- Input costs — polymer and adhesive prices move through the year
The only honest way to buy tape: fix your micron requirement first, then compare suppliers on price per metre at that micron, with the roll length stated in writing. Anything else is comparing different products at the same headline price.

What micron packaging tape should I use?
Roughly 40 to 65 micron covers general carton sealing, with the mid to upper part of that range being the sensible default for e-commerce and despatch. Go higher for heavy cartons and for stock stored in hot conditions. Very thin tape is a false economy: it releases in summer heat and it splits and slivers off the roll, slowing every single pack your team seals.
How do I know if I am getting a full-length tape roll?
Measure one. A roll sold as 100 m may contain considerably less, and because nobody measures tape it is the easiest place in packaging to cut cost quietly. The practical defence is to compare suppliers on price per metre rather than price per roll, and to get the roll length stated in writing. If a per-roll price looks unusually low, the length or the micron explains it.
Why is my tape not sticking to cartons?
Usually the surface or the pressure rather than the tape. Dust, damp and recycled kraft with a loose surface all reduce adhesion, and tape laid on without firm pressure peels back at the ends because adhesive needs contact pressure to bond. On rough or recycled cartons a hot-melt adhesive grabs better than standard acrylic. Old stock stored in a hot corner also fails regardless of micron.

Printed tape carries a minimum order quantity and a lead time set by the converter, so it suits regular despatch volumes - plan branded stock ahead of a festive or sale peak.
Do you supply masking, cloth and double-sided tape?
Alongside BOPP carton sealing tape we can supply masking tape for painting and surface protection, cloth or duct tape for repairs and site use, and double-sided tape for mounting. These are different products with different adhesives and are priced separately - tell us the application rather than just the width, since the wrong tape type is a more common problem than the wrong size.
