"Safety net" covers at least four products with different materials, mesh sizes, twine strengths and fixings. A pigeon net and a child safety net look similar in a photograph and are not remotely the same thing — one is a light screen, the other is a load-bearing installation. Getting that distinction right is the whole job.

If you are buying for child safety, read this first. A net is not a railing — it supplements a sound, compliant balcony railing and does not replace one. If your railing is loose, too low, or has gaps a child can pass through, that is a structural problem to fix first and no net changes it. Never accept bird netting for this job: it is a light screen, not designed to arrest the weight of a child or a falling object. Ask which product is being supplied and get the twine and fixing specification in writing.

The one spec that always matters is UV stabilisation. In Indian sun an untreated net stiffens, chalks and starts failing within a season or two — usually at the anchor points where tension is highest. Ask the question, and ask what warranty comes with the answer.

How Installation Works
- Survey. We measure the opening including returns and the underside of any overhang, and identify sound anchor points.
- Perimeter. Stainless hooks or eye bolts anchored into concrete or solid masonry, with stainless wire rope run through them as the tension line.
- Tension. The net is tensioned onto that rope with turnbuckles, working the corners properly. A slack net looks poor, flaps in wind and wears out fast at the anchors.
- Close every gap. A pigeon needs a surprisingly small opening. Most net "failures" are not torn netting but unclosed edges at corners and under overhangs.
- Access panel where needed, so the balcony can still be cleaned, maintained and — importantly — escaped from.
Two things worth insisting on. First, stainless fixings — mild steel hooks rust through in two monsoons and the net comes down with them. Second, anchors into structure, not into false ceilings, cladding or plaster. Also check whether your developer prohibits drilling into structural glazing before anyone starts.
Society Permission & Fire Escape
This is the part buyers discover after paying, and it is why a few nets come straight back down:
- Written RWA or society permission. Anything visible on the facade is usually a common-area matter, and many societies mandate a specific net colour so the elevation stays uniform
- Developer restrictions on drilling into structural glazing or particular facade elements — check before, not after
- Owner consent if you rent. Get it in writing, and agree who removes it at the end of the lease
- Fire escape. If the balcony forms part of an escape route, a permanently sealed net is a hazard. Insist on an openable section and raise it with your facility manager
- Neighbour effect. Pigeons displaced from your balcony move to the next one along, which is why netting tends to spread through a whole stack — a joint RWA job is often cheaper for everyone
What Determines the Price of Safety Netting
Our published starting rate is from ₹3 per sq ft. Being straight about what that means: it is a starting point for basic bird netting, not a finished price for every job. The figure moves with:
- Net type — child safety and monkey nets cost considerably more than bird netting, in both material and fixings
- Mesh size and twine thickness, and whether the netting is UV-stabilised
- Fixing hardware — stainless hooks, wire rope and turnbuckles are a real line item, and the part cheap quotes cut
- Height and access — a 14th-floor balcony is a different job from a 2nd-floor one, and on tall buildings access often costs more than the net
- Area and minimum charge — small jobs carry a higher effective rate because site time dominates
- Warranty — on the netting, and separately on the installation
Ask for it split three ways — net, hardware, installation. A single per-sq-ft number tells you nothing about which corner is being cut, and the corner usually cut is the hardware, which is also the part that fails first.
Looking After It
- Walk the perimeter once a year and after any storm — sag means the anchors or turnbuckles need attention
- Check anchor points for rust, movement or spalled concrete around the fixing
- Look for fraying where the net meets the rope, which is where wear concentrates
- Wash dust off with plain water — a dusty net is far more visible than a clean one
- Squeeze the netting. Stiff, chalky or brittle material is UV-degraded and due for replacement
- For child safety nets, treat this as non-optional safety maintenance, not housekeeping

What is the difference between a pigeon net and a child safety net?
Completely different products. A pigeon or bird net is a light barrier that keeps birds out - it is not designed to take the weight of a person or a falling object. A child safety net is a load-bearing installation with much stronger twine, a smaller mesh and rated fixings. A bird net must never be used for child safety, and the two should never be quoted interchangeably.
How much do balcony safety nets cost?
Our published starting rate is from Rs.3 per sq ft, which applies to basic bird netting - a starting point rather than a finished price. The final figure depends on net type, mesh size and twine, fixing hardware, the floor height and how difficult access is, and any minimum area. Child safety and monkey nets cost significantly more because both material and fixings are heavier. Ask for a quote splitting net, hardware and installation.
What mesh size keeps pigeons out?
Roughly one inch, about 25 mm - small enough to stop pigeons while staying visually light. Larger mesh lets smaller birds through, and a finer mesh is used where sparrows are the concern. Monkeys are a different problem: mesh can be larger but the twine must be far heavier, because the failure mode is tearing rather than passing through.
Do I need society or RWA permission?
Usually yes. Most societies treat anything visible on the facade as a common-area matter, and many specify a permitted net colour to keep the elevation uniform. Some developers also prohibit drilling into structural glazing. Get written permission first, and if you are a tenant get the owner's consent too - a net that has to come down again is an avoidable cost.
Can a balcony net block a fire escape?
It can, and this matters. If the balcony forms part of an escape route or is the access a fire service would use, a permanently sealed net is a hazard. Ask for an openable or zipped access section, and never net over the only means of escape without checking the building's fire strategy. Raise it with your society or facility manager rather than deciding alone.
How long does a safety net last?
A quality UV-stabilised net gives several years in Indian conditions, but it depends on sun exposure, whether the material was UV-treated, and how well it was tensioned. The fixings and perimeter rope usually fail before the netting does, which is why stainless hardware matters. Check tension and anchors annually and after storms, and treat sagging, fraying at anchors or stiff brittle material as a replacement signal.
