PP strapping — packing patti in everyday trade use — does the job tape cannot: it holds a load together under tension. A strapped carton resists bursting when stacked, a strapped bundle stays a bundle, and a strapped pallet arrives as it left. Three things decide whether it works: the right width and grade, a core that fits your machine, and a properly tensioned joint.

Choosing Width and Grade

Match the grade to how you apply it. Manual grade is fine with a hand tensioner and seals. If you run a semi-automatic or automatic machine, use machine-grade strap on the correct core size — manual grade in a machine causes jams, misfeeds and inconsistent welds, and the downtime costs far more than the strap saved. Tell us your machine model when ordering.

PP or PET Strapping?

PP is the right answer for the great majority of carton and bundle work: economical, flexible, easy to apply, and adequate for loads that do not settle much. PET (polyester) strapping is stronger, holds tension for longer and resists stretching, so it is used where a heavy load will be stored or shipped for a long period and slackness would be a problem. For everyday despatch, PP is what you want — tell us the load weight and journey if you are unsure and we will say plainly which one your job needs.

Strapping Properly

Tension it, do not just wrap it. A loose strap does nothing; the whole mechanism is compression on the load
Two straps on a heavy carton, placed roughly a third in from each end rather than at the very edges
Use edge protectors on soft or sharp-cornered loads, or the strap cuts into the goods as it tensions
Never hand-tie strapping. A knotted strap slips under load — it needs a seal, a friction weld or a machine seal
Do not over-tension on crushable cartons; you can collapse the box you were trying to protect
Strap is not a lifting handle — it is a genuine safety point. Straps are not rated for lifting and will fail if used to hoist or drag a load

A strap is only as strong as its joint. The most common strapping failure we hear about is not the strap breaking but the seal pulling through, because it was poorly crimped or the wrong seal size was used. What Determines the Price of PP Strapping

Quoted at current rates, as strapping tracks polymer input costs. The drivers:

Width and thickness — the biggest factor; you are buying material weight per metre
Grade — machine grade costs more than manual and gives consistent feeding and welds
Roll length — longer rolls are more economical per metre and mean fewer machine changeovers
Core size — a compatibility requirement rather than a price choice, but non-standard cores can cost more
Quantity — the main lever; strapping is bought by the box of rolls and rates improve sharply with volume
Colour and printing — standard white and natural are the value options; printed strap carries a minimum order
PP or PET — PET costs more and is only needed for heavy, long-duration loads

Where buyers lose money: buying the cheapest thin strap and then using three where two of the right specification would hold. Also common is running manual-grade strap through a machine to save a little per roll, which costs far more in jams and downtime than it ever saves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is packing patti?

Packing patti is the common local term for PP strapping - the polypropylene strap used to hold cartons, bundles and pallets together under tension. It is the same product sold as packing strip, strapping roll or PP strap. What differentiates one roll from another is the width, the thickness, whether it is manual or machine grade, and the core size, not the name it is sold under.

What width of strapping do I need?

9 mm for light bundling such as printed matter and small cartons, 12 mm as the general workhorse for most carton and despatch strapping, 15 mm for heavier cartons and pallets, and 19 mm for heavy industrial bundling and high-tension work. Going wider than needed wastes material; going narrower than needed means the strap snaps under tension, usually while it is being applied.

What is the difference between manual and machine grade strapping?

Machine grade is manufactured to tighter consistency so it feeds reliably and welds cleanly in a semi-automatic or automatic strapping machine. Manual grade is intended for hand tools with seals. Running manual grade through a machine causes jams, misfeeds and inconsistent welds, and the downtime costs far more than the small saving per roll. Should I use PP or PET strapping?
