How to Read a Turf Spec

Four figures tell you what you are actually buying. Ask for all four:

UV stabilisation is where cheap turf cuts corners, and you cannot see it in a sample. Un-stabilised or poorly stabilised grass can fade to a pale yellow-green and turn brittle within two or three Delhi summers — at which point the fibres snap rather than bend and the whole area has to be replaced. Ask whether the yarn is UV stabilised and for how long it is warranted. It is the difference between seven to ten years and two.

Realism comes from colour mix, not length. Good turf blends two or three greens with a brown or beige thatch layer at the base, which is what real grass looks like up close. A single flat green at 40 mm looks far more artificial than a well-blended 25 mm. Look at the colour variation in a sample before you look at the blade length.

The Heat Question — Honestly

Artificial grass gets hot in direct summer sun. Real grass does not, because it cools itself by transpiring water. In a Delhi afternoon a dark, dense turf in full sun becomes uncomfortably hot underfoot — noticeably hotter than the tile next to it. This is the most common complaint about artificial grass in North India and it is worth knowing before you buy, not after.

It is a non-issue in shade, in a covered balcony, or in the morning and evening — which is when most people use a balcony anyway. If your area takes full afternoon sun and you want to walk on it barefoot: choose a lighter shade rather than a dark one, hose it down a few minutes before use, and consider shade from a pergola, blind or planting.

Drainage Decides Everything

Water must still be able to get out. Turf backing is perforated so water passes through it, but if the slab's fall is interrupted or the drain outlet ends up covered, water collects underneath instead. That means damp, smell, mosquito breeding, and over time damage to the waterproofing beneath — a far bigger repair than the turf cost. Never seal the full perimeter down, keep every outlet clear and accessible, and lift the turf occasionally to clean beneath it.

What pile height should I choose?

Around 20 to 25 mm for balconies and terraces, which is the most popular choice and looks tidy without needing infill. 30 to 40 mm for gardens and lawns, where a longer blade reads as more realistic from a distance. 10 to 15 mm for decorative and indoor use or event work. Above 40 mm looks impressive in a photograph but tends to flatten in traffic unless it is properly infilled, so it suits display areas more than a balcony people actually walk on.

Does artificial grass get hot in summer?

Yes, and this is the honest limitation nobody mentions. Real grass cools itself by transpiring water; artificial grass cannot, so in direct Delhi summer sun a dark dense turf becomes uncomfortably hot underfoot in the afternoon — noticeably hotter than the tile beside it. How do you clean and maintain artificial grass?

Hose it down periodically to wash out dust, which in Delhi is the main thing that dulls it. Brush the pile against the direction of traffic every few weeks to lift flattened fibres. Remove leaves and debris before they break down into the pile and hold moisture. For pets, rinse the area regularly and use an enzyme cleaner rather than a bleach-based one. No watering, no mowing, no fertiliser — but it is not zero maintenance, and turf that is never cleaned looks tired quickly.

Can artificial grass be laid over tiles or concrete?

Yes, and that is how most balcony and terrace installations are done — it lays straight over existing tiles or concrete with no demolition. The critical requirement is that water must still be able to reach the drain outlet. Perforated backing lets water through the turf, but if the fall of the slab is blocked or the outlet is covered, water pools underneath and you get damp, smell and eventually damage to the waterproofing. Keep outlets clear and never seal the whole perimeter down.
