Artificial Grass

Outdoor Artificial Grass in Delhi NCR — Gardens & Landscaping

Green through summer, usable minutes after rain, and no mud tracked indoors. On soil, what goes underneath matters as much as the turf on top.

From ₹20/sq ft  |  UV stabilised  |  Built on a compacted sub-base

A real lawn in Delhi NCR is a losing battle: it needs daily water through summer, turns to mud in monsoon, and still looks patchy. Artificial grass stays green all year, drains within minutes of rain stopping, and needs no watering or mowing. The difference between an outdoor installation that still looks flat and convincing in five years and one that goes lumpy in two is almost entirely what was built underneath it.

The Three Applications

Garden Areas

Replacing a lawn that will not survive a Delhi summer. Medium to long pile, 30–40 mm, on a compacted sub-base — the most realistic option when the area reads as a lawn.

Landscape & Outdoor Turf

Pathways, borders, planter surrounds, courtyards and commercial landscaping. Shorter pile stands up better to constant walking and defines shapes more crisply.

Play & Recreational Areas

Softer and more forgiving than tile or compacted earth, and usable in all weather with no mud. Under play equipment, a shock pad underlay is specified against the equipment's fall height.

The Sub-Base — Where the Job Is Won or Lost

On soil, turf is only as good as what it sits on. This is the sequence, and every step earns its place:

  1. Excavate roughly 75–100 mm, removing existing grass, roots and soft topsoil
  2. Weed membrane laid across the excavated base to stop growth from below
  3. Compacted aggregate — crushed stone laid and compacted in layers. This is the structural layer that stops settlement
  4. Screed layer of granite dust or sharp sand, levelled to the finished profile and compacted again
  5. Edge restraint at the perimeter so the edges cannot lift or spread over time
  6. Turf laid, joins taped and bonded, then trimmed to the edges
  7. Infill and brush where the pile height calls for silica sand to keep blades upright
Compaction is the step that gets skipped, and it is the one that cannot be fixed afterwards. An uncompacted base settles unevenly under foot traffic and monsoon rain, and within a year or two the surface shows hollows and ripples that no amount of brushing corrects — the turf has to come up and the base be rebuilt. It is also the reason a properly quoted garden installation costs roughly double a suspiciously cheap one. Ask any quotation to itemise the sub-base separately from the turf.

Drainage

The perforated backing lets water through, and the aggregate sub-base takes it away — which is why a turf lawn is usable minutes after rain while Delhi clay soil stays waterlogged for hours. Two things to get right:

  • Maintain a fall away from the house and from any structure, so water moves rather than sitting
  • Keep the aggregate layer free-draining — fine soil worked into it over time reduces permeability, which is another reason a clean membrane and proper edge restraint matter

For balconies and terraces, drainage works completely differently — see balcony and terrace grass.

Key Features

  • Weather-resistant and UV-stabilised fibres — the specification that matters most in North Indian sun
  • Natural grass-like appearance year-round — green in May and green in December
  • Durable and suitable for outdoor foot traffic — when the grade matches the use
  • Low maintenance with no watering or mowing — no fertiliser, no pesticide, no mower
  • Saves a great deal of water compared with keeping a real lawn alive here

Pets, Play and Real Life

For Dogs

No mud indoors and nothing to dig up — two of the commonest reasons people call us. Specify a free-draining perforated backing, rinse the area regularly, and use an enzyme cleaner rather than bleach so odour is broken down rather than masked.

For Children

Softer than tile or compacted earth, usable in all weather, and no mud. Under climbing equipment, turf alone is not fall protection — that needs a shock pad specified against the equipment's fall height. Tell us the equipment height if that applies.

Monsoon and Summer — Both Sides

Monsoon is where it wins. Water drains straight through the backing and the aggregate base, so the area is usable within minutes of rain stopping. No mud, no bare patches, no churned-up lawn in September.

Summer is the trade-off. In direct afternoon sun the surface gets hot underfoot — hotter than natural grass, which cools itself by transpiring water. Shade planting, a lighter shade of turf, or a quick hose down before use all help, and it is a non-issue in shaded areas or outside peak afternoon hours.

Is It Environmentally Better? Honestly, Partly

It saves a very large amount of water, which in Delhi NCR is the strongest argument there is, and it needs no fertiliser, no pesticide and no petrol mower. Against that, it is a plastic product that is difficult to recycle at end of life, and it does not support soil life or insects the way a real lawn does. If the realistic alternative is a lawn that needs daily watering just to survive the summer, the water saving is substantial and genuine — but it is not a wholly green product, and we would rather say so.

What Determines the Price

  • Ground preparation — on a garden installation, often comparable to the turf cost itself. The largest variable and the one most often left out of a cheap quote
  • Pile height — longer pile uses more yarn per square metre
  • Face weight and density — the real quality difference
  • UV stabilisation — worth paying for; it is what sets seven to ten years against two
  • Edge restraint and infill — materials and labour at the perimeter
  • Shock pad — where play equipment fall heights require it
  • Access — a garden reachable only through the house costs more in labour than one with side access

Turf from ₹20 per sq ft — a genuine entry rate for economy grades, not a finished installed price. We quote turf and sub-base as separate lines so you can see exactly what the groundwork costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What goes underneath outdoor artificial grass?
On soil, a proper sub-base — and this is the part that decides whether the lawn still looks good in three years. The ground is excavated to roughly 75 to 100 mm, a weed membrane is laid, then compacted crushed stone or aggregate, then a finer screed of granite dust or sharp sand levelled and compacted again. The turf goes on top of that. Skip the compaction and the surface develops hollows and ripples as the ground settles; skip the membrane and weeds push through at the joins.
Do weeds grow through artificial grass?
Not through the backing itself, but they will find the joins, the edges and any seed that lands in the pile and germinates in accumulated dust. A weed membrane under the sub-base stops growth from below, which is the main route. From above, the occasional weed at an edge pulls out easily if you deal with it early. A properly built installation with a membrane and clean edge detailing needs very little weeding compared with a real lawn.
Is artificial grass suitable for pets?
It works well, and many people choose it precisely because dogs stop bringing mud indoors and cannot dig holes in it. Specify a perforated backing with good drainage so urine passes through rather than sitting in the pile, and consider a slightly higher drainage capacity sub-base for a heavily used dog area. Rinse the area regularly and use an enzyme cleaner rather than a bleach-based one, which breaks down odour instead of masking it. Solids are picked up as normal.
Is artificial grass safe for a playground?
It is softer and more forgiving than tile, concrete or compacted earth, and it stays usable in all weather with no mud — which is why schools and play areas use it. For genuine fall-height protection under climbing equipment, though, turf alone is not enough: that requires a shock pad underlay specified against the equipment's fall height. If you are surfacing under play equipment rather than just a play lawn, tell us the equipment height so it can be specified properly.
How does outdoor artificial grass handle monsoon and Delhi summer?
Monsoon is where it earns its keep — water drains straight through the perforated backing and the sub-base, so there is no mud and the area is usable within minutes of rain stopping, which a real lawn in Delhi clay certainly is not. Summer is the trade-off: in direct afternoon sun the surface gets hot underfoot, hotter than natural grass, because it cannot transpire. Shade, a lighter shade of turf, or hosing it down before use all help.
Is artificial grass really eco-friendly?
Partly, and it is worth being straight about both sides. It saves a very large amount of water — the strongest argument in a water-scarce region like Delhi NCR — and needs no fertiliser, no pesticide and no petrol mower. Against that, it is a plastic product that is difficult to recycle at end of life, and it does not support soil life or insects the way a real lawn does. If your alternative is a lawn that needs daily watering to survive, the water saving is substantial and real.
How much does outdoor artificial grass cost installed?
The turf itself starts from ₹20 per sq ft as a genuine entry rate for economy grades. On a garden installation the ground preparation is often comparable to the turf cost, because excavation, aggregate, compaction and screeding are real work with real materials — and that is exactly why cheap quotes tend to omit them. Ask any quotation to itemise sub-base separately from turf. Over an existing hard surface, preparation is minimal and the cost drops sharply.

Get the Groundwork Quoted Properly

Tell us the area, what is there now — soil, grass or a hard surface — and how the space will be used. We'll itemise turf and sub-base separately so you can see exactly what the groundwork costs.

Pile heights, backings, sub-base build-ups and depths described here are the options and practices commonly used in the Indian market and are general guidance, not a stock list or quotation. The ₹20 per sq ft figure is our published starting rate for economy turf and excludes ground preparation. Surface temperature in direct sunlight is materially higher than natural grass. Turf alone does not provide critical fall-height protection for play equipment; that requires a shock pad specified to the equipment's tested fall height. Ground condition, drainage and access can only be assessed on site.
