Fabric Decides Everything
| Fabric | What It Does | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Blackout | Blocks essentially all light through the cloth | Bedrooms, kids' rooms, media rooms, day sleepers |
| Dim-out | Heavily reduces light without total darkness | Living rooms, guest rooms, offices |
| Translucent | Diffuses daylight, gives privacy, no view out | Bathrooms, street-facing windows, stairwells |
| Sunscreen (mesh) | Cuts glare and heat while keeping the view | Home offices, studies, balcony-facing rooms |
| Wipeable / coated | Sponges clean of grease and splashes | Kitchens, utility areas, cafeterias |
Sunscreen Openness Factor — The Number Nobody Explains
Sunscreen fabrics are rated by openness factor: the percentage of the fabric that is open weave. It decides the trade-off between view and glare control, and it is the single most useful spec on this page:
| Openness | Glare & Privacy | View Out | Choose For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1% | Most glare cut, best privacy | Least view | Harsh west sun, ground-floor privacy |
| 3% | Strong glare control | Good | Home offices, screen work |
| 5% | Balanced | Very good | Living rooms keeping the view |
| 10% | Least glare cut | Clearest view | Shaded windows, view is the priority |

Getting Real Blackout From a Roller Blind
Blackout fabric and a blackout room are not the same thing. An inside-mount blind must be slightly narrower than the recess to run freely, so a thin outline of light down each side is normal and cannot be eliminated. To get close to full darkness:
- Outside mount with 3–4 inches of overlap on each side and above the frame — the cheapest way to kill edge light
- Or inside mount plus a curtain over it — the combination that actually darkens a bedroom
- Take the drop below the sill rather than stopping level with it
- Choose a cassette, which closes the gap at the top where light spills over the roll

Care
- Dust with a soft brush or vacuum attachment with the blind fully lowered, working top to bottom.
- Wipeable fabrics sponge clean with mild detergent — the reason to specify them for a kitchen.
- Blackout fabrics: spot clean only, gently. Hard rubbing damages the coating permanently and it shows as a shiny patch.
- Sunscreen mesh: vacuum only. Do not scrub — the weave distorts and will not recover.
- Roll it up dry. Storing a damp blind rolled causes marks along the fabric that do not come out.
- Operate from the centre of the bottom rail so the fabric tracks square on the tube.
What Determines the Price of Roller Blinds
We quote per window rather than publishing a rate card. The drivers:
- Fabric — the biggest factor. Plain translucent is the value end; blackout, designer prints and technical sunscreen fabrics cost more
- Openness factor on sunscreens — tighter weaves generally cost more than open ones
- Window area — priced largely by size, with small blinds carrying a minimum because fabrication time does not scale down
- Cassette or open roll — a covered aluminium cassette costs more and looks considerably better at eye level
- Mechanism — chain is the baseline, spring/cordless costs more, motorisation is the largest jump and needs power at the window
- Bottom rail finish — a fabric-wrapped bar costs more than a plain aluminium one
- Splitting a wide window — two units above about 6–7 ft
- Number of windows — cost per window falls as measurement and installation time spreads
