Vinyl sheet flooring arrives as wide rolls rather than planks or tiles, which means a room may have only one or two joints instead of hundreds. Those joints can then be heat-welded into a continuous surface, and the sheet can be turned up the wall so there is no crevice at the skirting at all. That is why hospitals, clinics and laboratories specify it — and it works just as well in a kitchen, an office or a school.

The Three Grades

Residential

For houses and flats — bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens. Layered construction with realistic wood and stone prints, and a wear layer sized for domestic traffic. Cold-sealed seams are normally sufficient.

Commercial

Built for heavy foot traffic and frequent cleaning — offices, shops and public buildings. Heavier wear layers, tougher backing, and welded seams where spills and mopping are constant.

Hospital & Healthcare

Hygienic, seamless and easy to disinfect, for clinics and laboratories. Usually homogeneous sheet with heat-welded joints and coved wall junctions, so the whole floor cleans as one unbroken plane.

Homogeneous or Heterogeneous?

This is the specification decision that matters most, and it is almost never explained:

Most projects want heterogeneous. It looks far better and costs less, and in a home or office nothing is gained by paying for a floor you could sand. Homogeneous earns its price only where a surface must survive disinfectants, trolleys and decades of cleaning — which is exactly the clinical case.

Seams and Coving — What Makes It Hygienic

Heat-Welded Seams

The joint is grooved and a matching PVC rod is fused into it with hot air, making the two sheets genuinely one surface. Nothing can enter the joint. The clinical standard, and the right choice for any wet area.

Cold-Sealed Seams

A chemical seam sealer run along the joint. Faster and cheaper, and perfectly adequate for homes, offices and dry commercial areas. Not appropriate where disinfection or standing water is a factor.

Coving

The sheet is turned up the wall over a curved former, so floor and wall meet in a sealed radius with no crevice at the skirting. Essential in theatres, clinics, labs, commercial kitchens and wash areas.

Skirting Finish

A conventional trim at the wall. Cheaper, quicker, and entirely fine in a home or office where nothing needs to be disinfected or contained.

If you are specifying a clinical floor, put welding and coving in writing. Both are skilled, slow work and both are the first things dropped from a quote that needs to look cheap. A "welded" floor with cold-sealed joints and a plain skirting is not a hygienic floor, and the difference is invisible until an infection-control audit.

The Subfloor Matters More Here Than Anywhere

Sheet vinyl is thin and fully bonded, so it telegraphs everything underneath it. A ridge, a screw head, a hollow or a patch of trapped moisture will show through as a line or a bubble, and no amount of good laying fixes it afterwards. It must go onto a smooth, dry, level base — which usually means levelling compound and waiting for it to cure. That wait is exactly why the step gets skipped in a rushed quote.

What is the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl sheet?

Homogeneous sheet is one single material all the way through, so the colour and pattern run right down to the backing. It can be sanded and polished when it dulls, and a scratch does not expose a different layer — which is why hospitals and laboratories specify it. Heterogeneous sheet is layered, with a printed design under a clear wear layer, giving far more realistic wood and stone effects at lower cost. Homogeneous for clinical and heavy industrial use; heterogeneous for everywhere else.

Why do hospitals use sheet vinyl rather than tiles?

Because joints harbour bacteria and tiles have grout lines everywhere. Sheet vinyl comes in wide widths so a room may have only one or two seams, and those seams can be heat-welded with a matching rod into a continuous, sealed surface. Add coving at the wall junction and the floor curves up the wall, leaving no crevice at the skirting at all. The result can be mopped and disinfected as a single unbroken plane, which is simply not achievable with tile.

What is coving and do I need it?

Coving is where the sheet is turned up the wall over a curved former instead of stopping at a skirting, so the floor and wall meet in a sealed radius with no crevice. It matters wherever hygiene or water containment is critical — operating theatres, clinics, laboratories, commercial kitchens, wash areas. In a home or a normal office it is unnecessary and adds cost. If you are specifying a clinical space, ask for it explicitly, because it is skilled work and it is often left out of a cheap quote.

How are sheet vinyl seams sealed?

Two methods. Heat welding grooves the joint and fuses a matching PVC rod into it with a hot-air gun, giving a genuinely continuous surface — the clinical standard. Cold welding uses a chemical seam sealer along the joint, which is quicker and cheaper and adequate for offices and homes. Both need the sheet to be properly conditioned and laid flat first. If a supplier quotes welded seams, ask which method, because the difference in cost and in performance is significant.

Is vinyl sheet flooring suitable for a kitchen or bathroom?

It is one of the best choices for both. The surface is waterproof, there are far fewer seams than any tiled floor, and with welded joints a bathroom floor becomes genuinely water-tight rather than merely water-resistant. For wet areas ask about the slip rating — a smoother finish that is fine in a bedroom can be dangerous underfoot in a shower room. Bear in mind that the subfloor beneath is not waterproof, so a leak still needs fixing rather than covering.
