Kitchen steam, monsoon humidity, hands on the corridor wall: all of it destroys a paper-based covering within a season or two. A vinyl surface wipes clean and does not absorb moisture. What varies enormously between products, and what almost nobody is told, is the washability grade.

Washability Grades — The Spec to Ask For

"Washable" is not one thing. Ranges are labelled by how much cleaning the surface actually tolerates, and the difference decides whether a kitchen wall still looks right in three years:

Match the grade to the room, not to the budget. A spongeable range on a kitchen wall will look worn in a year because it is being cleaned harder than it was designed for. The price difference between grades is usually small next to the cost of redoing the wall.

What "Waterproof" Honestly Means

The surface is water resistant. The seams and the adhesive behind it are not. Splashes wipe off, steam does no harm, and humidity will not bubble it — that is real and it is why PVC belongs in a kitchen. But water running down a wall, or sitting against a seam, eventually works behind the paper. And no wall covering survives rising damp or a leak. If a wall has a damp history, fix the source first; we will tell you at the survey rather than take the order and watch it fail.

For walls that take direct water — shower enclosures, splashbacks, wash areas — use PVC wall panels instead. They have sealed joints; wallpaper does not.

What Determines the Price

Washability grade and vinyl weight — the main driver, and the one that decides how long it lasts
Backing — non-woven costs more than paper backing and is easier to hang and to strip later
Pattern repeat — a large repeat means more rolls for the same wall. A real cost, not a technicality
Finish — embossed, textured and metallic ranges cost more than flat prints
Roll size — wide-format rolls often work out better on large uninterrupted walls
Wall preparation — stripping, filling and priming. The item most often missing from a cheap quote
Installation — matching around windows, corners and switches is slow, skilled work

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PVC wallpaper waterproof?

The surface is water resistant, which is the honest way to put it. Splashes wipe off, steam does not soften it, and humidity will not make it bubble the way paper does. What is not waterproof is the seams and the adhesive behind it. Water running down a wall or sitting against a seam will eventually get behind the paper, and no wall covering survives rising damp or an actual leak. Use it confidently in a kitchen or a humid room; do not use it to hide a damp problem.

Can PVC wallpaper be used in bathrooms?

Yes, on the dry walls of a bathroom — the ones away from the shower. It handles the steam and humidity that would destroy paper wallpaper. What it should not do is take direct spray. For a shower enclosure or a wall that gets wet daily, tiles or PVC wall panels are the right answer, because they have sealed joints and PVC wallpaper does not. Good ventilation matters either way.

How do you clean PVC wallpaper?

A damp cloth with mild soap for most marks, wiping gently and following the direction of the seams rather than scrubbing across them. Check the washability grade of your specific range before going harder — spongeable ranges tolerate only light wiping, while scrubbable grades take a soft brush. Avoid abrasive powders, solvents and harsh chemicals; they can dull or strip the printed surface permanently, and the damage cannot be repaired without replacing that drop.

What is the difference between PVC wallpaper and vinyl wallpaper?

Nothing meaningful. PVC is polyvinyl chloride, and vinyl is the everyday name for it, so the two terms describe the same material and are used interchangeably in the trade. What actually differs between products is the backing — paper or non-woven — the weight of the vinyl surface layer, and the washability grade. Those three decide how it performs, so ask about them rather than about the name on the label.

Is PVC wallpaper suitable for kitchens?

It is one of the few wall coverings that genuinely is. Cooking produces steam and airborne grease that soak into paper wallpaper and stain it permanently, while a vinyl surface wipes clean. Choose a washable or scrubbable grade rather than a spongeable one, since kitchen walls get cleaned often. Keep it off the wall directly behind a gas hob, where heat and heavy grease call for tile or a splashback panel.

How long does PVC wallpaper last?

Commonly eight to twelve years in a normal interior, and often longer in a low-traffic room. That is considerably more than paper-based wallpaper in the same conditions, which is the main argument for paying more upfront. What usually ends its life is not wear but the wall behind it, seams in a persistently damp room, or sunlight fading the pattern on a wall that takes direct afternoon light.
