Bubble against a polished surface can leave marks. Under sustained pressure or in heat, bubble pattern can emboss a high-gloss, painted or soft-lacquer finish. For anything with a show surface — furniture panels, appliance fronts, polished metal — put foam directly against the product and bubble on the outside. This is the most common cause of "it arrived undamaged but marked".
How to Build a Pack That Survives
Foam against the surface if the item has a finish worth protecting.
Bubble around that for impact, with more layers on corners and edges — corners take the hits.
Fill the voids. Most transit damage is not crushing, it is the item moving inside the box and hitting the walls. A snug pack survives a drop that a loose one does not.
Seal properly with adequate tape, and strap heavy cartons with PP strapping.
