Monomeric, Polymeric or Cast?

This is the decision that determines whether your signage still looks right in two years, and it is the one most buyers are never asked about:

Monomeric vinyl outdoors is the most common false economy in signage. It costs noticeably less and looks identical on day one. A year later the edges have lifted and the colour has gone flat, and you pay the application cost a second time. For anything on an exterior shopfront, specify polymeric as a minimum.

Applying to Painted Walls — Read This First

Vinyl removed from a painted wall can take the paint with it. This is the single most common complaint about wall decals and graphics, and it is almost always the paint, not the vinyl. Three rules:

Let fresh paint cure — typically two to four weeks before applying anything adhesive. Vinyl on green paint will lift it
Good-quality, well-bonded emulsion is fine. Cheap distemper, chalky or flaking paint is not — the vinyl will hold better than the paint does
Textured walls do not work. Vinyl needs a smooth surface; on a textured finish it only touches the high spots and peels within weeks

If the wall is questionable, we will tell you before applying rather than after. For a permanent decorative finish on a difficult wall, wallpaper or wall panels are the better answer.

Frosted Film on Glass

The most popular application we do, because it solves cabin privacy without building anything. Points that decide whether it looks professional:

The glass must be spotless. Any dust particle trapped underneath shows as a permanent bump — and it will be at eye level on a cabin partition
Decide the height before ordering. Full-height frost, a mid band for seated privacy, or a lower band — each reads very differently in the room
Cut-outs and logos can be plotted into the frost, which is a cheap way to brand a reception glass wall
Manifestation is a safety matter. Full-height clear glass doors and partitions need a visible marking at eye level so people do not walk into them — a frosted band does both jobs at once
Applied inside or outside? Interior application lasts far longer. Exterior faces need an exterior-rated film

What Determines the Price of Vinyl Film & Lettering

Quoted per job, because two signs of the same size can differ several-fold. The drivers:

Vinyl grade — monomeric, polymeric or cast. The biggest factor, and the one that decides how long it lasts
Plain cut or printed — printed graphics add print and lamination cost; plain cut colour vinyl is considerably cheaper
Lamination — needed on printed work that will be handled, walked on or exposed; adds cost and life
Cut complexity — fine lettering, thin strokes and detailed logos take far longer to weed than large simple text. This is labour, not material, and it surprises people
Area — frosted film and wall graphics are priced by area; lettering more by complexity than size
Application — supply-only is cheapest. Site application costs more, and glass and floor work take longer than flat wall work because the surface preparation has to be perfect
Height and access — high shopfront fascias and stairwell glass need equipment
Removing old vinyl — stripping aged, baked-on film off glass is slow work and is quoted separately. Old monomeric is the worst

Where to spend and where not to: spend on the grade if it is outdoors — polymeric minimum. Save on simple indoor lettering, where monomeric is entirely adequate. And keep the artwork simple where you can: a clean bold typeface costs a fraction of an intricate script to cut and weed, and reads better from across the street anyway.

What is vinyl writing or cut vinyl lettering?

It is self-adhesive coloured vinyl film cut to the shape of your letters or logo on a plotter, with the unwanted material weeded away, then supplied on transfer tape so it can be applied as one piece. There is no printing involved - the colour is the vinyl itself, which is why it looks crisp and lasts well. It is the standard way shop names, glass lettering and vehicle signage are produced.

Which vinyl should I use for an outdoor shopfront?

Polymeric as a minimum, or cast for premium long-life work. Monomeric vinyl costs less and looks identical on day one, but outdoors it shrinks, cracks and lifts at the edges within a year or so - and you then pay the application cost a second time. Indicative outdoor life is roughly 1 to 3 years for monomeric, 3 to 5 for polymeric and 5 to 8 for cast, varying by brand and exposure.
