How to Clean & Maintain Vinyl, SPC and PVC Flooring in India (2026)

Vinyl is one of the easiest floors to look after and one of the easiest to ruin. The difference is almost entirely down to how much water you use and what is in your cleaner.

Almost every damaged vinyl floor we get called out to look at was damaged by cleaning, not by use. A steam mop borrowed from a neighbour, acid-based bathroom cleaner used "because the floor looked dull", or the standard Indian mopping method of tipping a bucket of water on the floor and pushing it around. The floor surface is waterproof; the seams, edges and the adhesive under it are not. Get those two things right and a vinyl or SPC floor will look new for a decade.

The Weekly Routine (Five Minutes a Room)

  1. Dry clean first — this is the important step

Sweep or vacuum thoroughly before any water touches the floor. Grit and sand dragged around under a wet mop is what actually scratches a wear layer. Skipping this step and going straight to mopping does more long-term damage than anything else on this page. Use a soft broom or a vacuum on its hard-floor setting — never a beater-bar head meant for carpet.

  2. Mix a mild solution

Lukewarm water with a small amount of pH-neutral floor cleaner is all that is needed. Vinyl does not need aggressive chemistry; it needs the dirt lifted off a smooth surface.

  3. Wring the mop until it is barely damp

Not dripping. A microfibre flat mop is ideal because it holds very little water. If you can see wet streaks that take more than a minute to dry, there is too much water on the floor.

  4. Mop along the plank direction

Working along the planks rather than across them keeps residue from being pushed into the seams. Rinse the mop head often instead of spreading the same dirty water across the whole room.

  5. Dry it

Wipe up any remaining moisture with a dry microfibre cloth, or run a fan during monsoon. A vinyl floor should be dry within a few minutes.

How often: sweep or vacuum daily, especially near entrances where grit comes in; damp mop two to three times a week in a normal home, daily in high-traffic areas or homes with pets and small children. Wipe spills immediately — nearly all permanent staining on vinyl comes from something that was left to sit.

What Ruins a Vinyl Floor

Never do these

  • Steam mops. Heat plus moisture is the worst combination for a resilient floor — it can soften adhesive, drive water into seams, and permanently cloud the wear layer. Most manufacturers explicitly prohibit them.
  • Acid-based cleaners. The bathroom cleaner used on tiles will etch and dull a vinyl wear layer. So will bleach, ammonia and strong phenyl concentrations.
  • Flooding the floor. Water standing on seams works into plank edges and under the sheet, lifting adhesive and swelling the core from below.
  • Abrasive scrubbers. Steel wool, scouring powder and hard nylon pads leave a permanent dull patch exactly where you scrubbed.
  • Wax or polish on a no-wax floor. Modern vinyl already has a factory wear layer. Polish builds up, yellows, gets slippery and then has to be stripped off.
  • Rubber-backed mats. Rubber and latex backings react with vinyl and leave a yellow-brown stain that is usually permanent. The same applies to rubber furniture feet.
  • Dragging furniture. One dragged sofa leg will do more damage in three seconds than a year of foot traffic.
  • Hot items placed directly on the floor. A hot vessel, an iron, or diya ash will mark the surface.
The doormat trap: the yellow patch that appears under an entrance mat after a few months is the most common complaint we hear, and it is not dirt — it is a chemical reaction with the rubber backing, and it cannot be cleaned out. Use mats with woven, felt or non-staining backings, and shift them occasionally.

Stain Removal: What Works on What

Always work from the gentlest option upward, and test any solvent in a hidden corner — under a bed, inside a wardrobe — before using it in the open:

StainWhat to TryNotes
Turmeric / haldiImmediate wipe, then mild detergent; baking soda paste for set stainsAct within minutes — pigment penetrates fast
Tea, coffee, juiceMild detergent solution, then plain waterUsually lifts completely if fresh
Oil, ghee, curryBlot first, then a mild degreasing dish soap solutionNever rub outward — it spreads the ring
Pen ink, markerIsopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth, dabbed not rubbedTest first; rinse after
Shoe scuff marksPlain white eraser, or a dry microfibre clothUsually not a stain at all — just transferred rubber
Nail polishSmall amount of acetone-free remover, immediately wiped offAcetone can attack the wear layer — test first
Sticker or tape residueWarm soapy water, then gentle plastic scraperNever a metal blade
Mehendi / hennaMild detergent quickly; alcohol on set marksCan stain permanently if left overnight
Rust marksMild detergent; specialist vinyl-safe rust remover if neededNever an acid-based rust remover

Scratches, Dents and Damaged Planks

Fixable at home

  • Surface scuffs — buff with a dry microfibre cloth or a white eraser
  • Light scratches — colour-matched vinyl repair kit or wax pencil
  • Small lifted edge — vinyl-safe adhesive and a weight, if caught early
  • Dulled patch — often just residue build-up; clean with plain water and no cleaner

Call someone

  • Deep gouge through the wear layer — the plank needs replacing
  • Bubbling or a spongy patch — usually moisture underneath, not a surface issue
  • Seams opening up across a room — expansion or subfloor movement
  • Discolouration spreading outward from one spot — check for a leak below
Keep a spare box. A damaged click-lock SPC or LVT plank can be swapped out in minutes — but only if you have a matching plank. Batch colours shift between production runs, so a plank bought two years later rarely matches. Ask for one or two spare boxes at installation and store them flat, indoors.

Care Differences by Floor Type

Floor TypeExtra Care PointWeak Spot
Vinyl sheetFewest seams, so the most water-tolerant of the familyWelded seams and perimeter edges
Vinyl rollWatch the adhesive at doorways and high-traffic turnsLifting at edges if water pools
LVT (glue-down tiles)Heat softens the adhesive — no steam, avoid direct harsh sunTile joints
SPC / WPC (click-lock)Rigid and the most water-resistant, but the click joints are still a path downJoints and expansion gaps at walls
PVC flooringVery forgiving; still avoid acid cleaners and abrasivesDulling from harsh chemicals

Season by Season in India

Monsoon

July – September

Wet footwear at the entrance is the main risk. Use an absorbent (non-rubber-backed) mat outside and inside the door, and dry any standing water immediately. Ventilate to keep humidity down.

Summer

April – June

Direct sun through a large window will fade one strip of floor over a few seasons. Use blinds or sheers during peak hours — the same fix protects your furniture.

Festive

Diwali & Functions

Diya ash, oil spills and heavy footfall in one week. Put down temporary runners for large gatherings and never place a diya directly on the floor.

Winter

December – February

Low humidity can slightly shrink planks and open joints. Nothing to do about it — just do not fill a hairline gap that will close again by summer.

Prevention Beats Cleaning

The eight-point protection list

  • Felt pads under every chair, table and sofa leg — check and replace them yearly
  • Soft rubber-free castors, or castor cups, under office chairs
  • Entrance mats with woven or felt backings, never rubber or latex
  • Lift furniture to move it; never drag, even a short distance
  • Wipe spills as they happen rather than at the next cleaning round
  • Blinds or curtains on the sunniest window to prevent strip fading
  • Keep one or two spare boxes of your original flooring batch
  • Trim pet nails — the most common source of fine surface scratching in homes with dogs

Our Recommendation

The whole of vinyl care comes down to three habits: sweep before you mop, keep the mop barely damp, and keep acid, bleach and steam away from the floor. Everything else on this page is detail. If your floor already has a problem that is not surface-level — bubbling, a spongy patch, seams opening, or discolouration spreading from one point — stop cleaning it and get it looked at, because those are all signs of moisture underneath rather than dirt on top, and cleaning harder makes them worse. See our waterproof flooring guide for what that means in wet areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a steam mop on vinyl or SPC flooring?
No. Heat plus moisture is the worst combination for a resilient floor. Steam can soften the adhesive under glue-down vinyl, force water into plank seams, and permanently dull or cloud the wear layer. Most vinyl and SPC manufacturers specifically prohibit steam cleaning, and using one can affect your warranty. Use a barely damp microfibre mop instead.
What is the best cleaner for vinyl flooring in India?
A pH-neutral floor cleaner in lukewarm water is all it needs. Avoid acid-based bathroom cleaners, bleach, ammonia, strong phenyl concentrations, scouring powders and oil-based soaps. Acidic cleaners etch and dull the wear layer, and oil soaps leave a residue that makes the floor slippery and attracts dust.
How do I remove turmeric or haldi stains from vinyl flooring?
Act fast — turmeric pigment penetrates a wear layer within minutes. Wipe the spill immediately, then clean with mild detergent. For a set stain, a paste of baking soda and water left a few minutes then wiped gently often lifts it, and isopropyl alcohol helps on stubborn marks. Test any solvent in a hidden corner first and never use an abrasive pad.
Why has my vinyl floor turned yellow under the doormat?
Almost always a rubber-backed or latex-backed mat. Chemicals in the backing react with the vinyl and cause a yellow-brown discolouration that is usually permanent and cannot be cleaned out. Use mats with woven, felt or non-staining backings, and move them periodically. The same reaction happens under rubber furniture feet and castors.
How do I fix scratches on a vinyl or SPC floor?
Light scuffs usually buff out with a dry microfibre cloth or a plain white eraser. Shallow scratches can be filled with a colour-matched vinyl repair kit or wax pencil. A deep gouge through the wear layer cannot be repaired invisibly — that plank needs replacing, which is quick with click-lock SPC or LVT but needs a patch on sheet vinyl. This is why keeping a spare box from the original batch matters.
How much water can I use when mopping vinyl flooring?
As little as possible — the mop should be wrung until barely damp, never dripping. Tipping water on the floor and pushing it around is the most damaging thing you can do to vinyl or SPC, because water works into seams and plank edges where it lifts adhesive and swells the core from below. The surface is waterproof; the joints and the subfloor are not.
How often should vinyl flooring be cleaned?
Sweep or vacuum daily, especially at entrances where grit enters, and damp mop two to three times a week in a normal home. High-traffic homes, or those with pets and young children, may need daily mopping. Deal with spills immediately rather than waiting — most permanent staining comes from spills left to sit.
