Office carpet is specified for three reasons, and appearance is only the third. It is the most effective way to cut the background hum that makes an open-plan floor exhausting by mid-afternoon. It goes down in modular tiles, so a damaged one is swapped in minutes instead of relaying the room. And it installs with no wet work and no curing time, which means a floor laid on Saturday is working on Monday.

Put a proper entrance mat at every external door. Most of what destroys office carpet is grit walked in from outside, ground into the pile by the next hundred people. A few square metres of matting at the entrance does more for the life of the whole floor than upgrading the carpet grade everywhere.

Buy the spares at the outset. Carpet is made in dye lots and shades shift between production runs. A tile bought in two years will not match, and it will be obvious in the middle of a floor. Spare tiles from the original batch are the cheapest insurance in the whole fit-out.

Why do offices use carpet tiles instead of wall-to-wall?

Because of what happens after installation. A coffee spill, a dragged chair or a cable run under the floor means lifting one tile rather than relaying a room, and worn walkway tiles can be rotated with ones from under desks so the floor ages evenly. Tiles also waste far less material around columns and odd corners, and they go down without adhesive across the whole floor, which makes a weekend installation realistic. Wall-to-wall still wins on seamless appearance in a cabin or boardroom.

Does office carpet actually help with noise?

Yes, and in an open-plan floor it is the single most effective thing you can specify. Carpet absorbs sound rather than reflecting it, so speech intelligibility improves and the cumulative background hum that makes an open office tiring by mid-afternoon drops noticeably. It also cuts footfall noise, which matters in a floor above occupied space. What it will not do is stop noise passing through walls or between floors — that needs partitions and ceiling treatment, not flooring.

Can carpet be installed without shutting the office?

Specify by traffic, not by budget. Private cabins and meeting rooms see light use and can take a lighter grade. Open-plan workstation areas need a solid commercial weight. Corridors, lift lobbies and reception take the heaviest wear in the building and should get the heaviest grade you buy — it is where visitors form their impression and where matting shows first. Face weight in grams per square metre is the figure to compare; ask for it in writing.

How long do office carpet tiles last?

Seven to twelve years is normal in a commercial setting when the grade matches the traffic, and tiles often outlast that in practice because worn ones get rotated or replaced individually rather than the whole floor being condemned. What ends their life is matting and crushing in the walkways rather than wearing through. Buying five to ten percent spare tiles from the same batch at the outset is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy — dye lots change.

Are carpet tiles good over a raised access floor?

They are the standard answer for it. Tiles lift out cleanly to reach the void below, which is exactly why raised floors exist, and their modular grid usually aligns sensibly with access panels. Loose-lay or lightly tackified installation is normal so panels stay accessible. Avoid full adhesive bonding over a raised floor — it defeats the purpose and makes future cabling work destructive and expensive.
