Most balconies in Delhi NCR are used for drying clothes and storing things, because bare tile is not somewhere you want to sit. Artificial grass changes that for a few thousand rupees and an afternoon's work, with no demolition and nothing permanent. Drainage: The Thing That Actually Matters

Never let turf block the path water takes to the drain. Balcony and terrace slabs are built with a slight fall to an outlet. Turf backing is perforated so rain passes through it, but if the turf is glued down across its whole area, or sealed tight all the way round the edge, water collects between the turf and the slab instead of draining away.

On a balcony that means damp, smell and mosquito breeding. On a terrace it is more serious: water standing against the waterproofing membrane for months is a leading cause of seepage into the flat below, and that repair costs many times what the grass cost.

How we lay it instead: turf cut accurately to shape and laid loose or fixed at selected points only; every drain outlet left clear and reachable; no continuous perimeter seal; joins taped rather than the whole area bonded. And we recommend lifting the turf two or three times a year to wash the tiles underneath — which is only possible if it was not glued down in the first place.

Two Things to Check Before You Buy

Railing Height

Turf raises the floor by 20–30 mm, which lowers the effective height of your balcony railing by the same amount. Trivial for adults; worth measuring properly if small children will play out there.

Door Clearance

Check that the balcony door still swings clear over the new surface. Most do, but a door with a low threshold or an existing sliding track needs looking at before the turf is cut.

Summer Heat — The Honest Picture

In direct afternoon sun in May and June, artificial grass gets hot underfoot — hotter than the tile beside it, because unlike real grass it cannot cool itself by transpiring water. On a covered or shaded balcony this simply does not arise. On an exposed one it is comfortable morning and evening, which is when most balconies get used anyway. If you want to sit out barefoot at midday in peak summer: choose a lighter shade rather than a dark one, hose it down a few minutes beforehand, and think about shade from a blind or pergola.

Can I install balcony grass without drilling or gluing?

Yes, and in a rented flat that is the right way to do it. Turf is heavy enough to lie flat on its own once cut accurately to the shape of the balcony, and where it needs help you can use double-sided tape at the joins, weighted planters at the corners, or a perimeter trim that sits on the surface rather than being fixed into it. Does balcony artificial grass get too hot in Delhi summer?

In direct afternoon sun, yes — artificial grass cannot cool itself the way real grass does, so a dark dense turf becomes uncomfortably hot underfoot in May and June. On a covered or shaded balcony it is a non-issue, and even on an exposed one it is comfortable in the morning and evening, which is when most balconies actually get used. If yours takes full afternoon sun and you want to sit on it barefoot, choose a lighter shade and hose it down a few minutes beforehand.

Is it safe for children and pets?

Yes on both counts. It gives a softer, more forgiving surface than balcony tiles, there is no mud and nothing to dig up, and there are no fertilisers or pesticides involved. For pets, choose a perforated backing so urine drains rather than pooling, rinse the area regularly, and use an enzyme cleaner rather than bleach. One point that has nothing to do with the grass but matters more than any of this: raising the floor level slightly reduces the effective height of your railing, so check it against the new surface before letting small children play there.
