Pattern Scale — Get This Right and Everything Else Follows
The single most common regret with wallpaper is scale, not colour. A pattern that looks balanced on an A4 sample can overwhelm a small bedroom or disappear entirely on a double-height wall:
| Wall / Room | Pattern scale | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small room, one feature wall | Small to medium repeat | A large motif gets cropped awkwardly at the edges and crowds the space |
| Large living room feature wall | Large repeat, bold motif | A small pattern reads as texture or noise from across the room |
| Double-height or stairwell wall | Large scale, or a mural | Anything small vanishes at that size |
| Narrow corridor | Small, quiet pattern or texture | You see it from close range — bold patterns feel oppressive |
| Whole room, all four walls | Subtle texture or small repeat | A bold pattern on four walls is exhausting to live in |
| Reception / boutique | Bold and distinctive | You want it remembered, and dwell time is short |
Types We Supply
Textured & Embossed
Real surface relief rather than printed shadow — linen, plaster, grasscloth and fabric effects. Holds up close where printed depth does not.
Damask & Classical
Traditional repeating motifs, often with a subtle sheen. Formal living and dining rooms, hotel interiors.
Geometric & Contemporary
Clean lines and repeating shapes. Reads as modern, and is more forgiving of small imperfections in wall flatness.
Floral & Botanical
From large statement blooms to fine repeating sprigs. Bedrooms, boutiques and feature walls.
Plain & Tonal Textures
Colour and subtle texture without a pattern. The safest choice for a whole room and the easiest to live with long term.
Metallic & Foil Accents
Reflective detail that shifts with the light. Striking in reception and dining spaces; unforgiving on an uneven wall.

Pattern Repeat: The Hidden Cost Nobody Mentions
Every patterned wallpaper has a repeat — the distance before the design starts again. To align the pattern across a seam, the installer cuts away part of each drop. The bigger the repeat, the more goes in the bin, and you pay for it:
| Design type | Wastage | Effect on cost |
|---|---|---|
| Plain or random texture | Almost none — no matching required | Lowest |
| Small repeat, straight match | Low | Modest |
| Large repeat, straight match | Noticeable | Higher — extra rolls needed |
| Large repeat, offset / half-drop match | Highest — each drop shifts | Can add substantially |
How Many Rolls
- Measure wall width and height, including above and below windows and doors on that wall
- Work out drops: wall width divided by roll width gives the number of vertical drops needed
- Drops per roll: roll length divided by wall height, allowing for the pattern repeat, gives how many drops each roll yields
- Divide and round up — always up, never to the nearest
- Order one spare roll from the same batch. Shade varies between print runs, so a roll bought later will not match. A damaged drop with no spare means redoing the wall
Send us the wall dimensions and the design you like and we will calculate it, including the repeat allowance — that is where most self-calculations fall short.
Choosing a Design You Will Not Tire Of
- One feature wall ages better than four. A bold pattern you love on one wall is a pleasure; the same pattern on every wall becomes tiring within a year
- Match the wall, not the sofa. Sofas get replaced and cushions change. Wallpaper is a five-to-ten-year decision, so tie it to the architecture and the light rather than to current furniture
- Very trend-led patterns date fastest. If you want something of the moment, put it where it is cheap to change — a small wall, a powder room
- Mid-tones are the most forgiving. Very dark papers show every scuff and make a small room smaller; very pale ones show every mark in a dusty city
- Check lightfastness on a sunlit wall. Strong direct sun fades printed designs over years, and it fades unevenly — a blind or a sheer curtain protects the investment
Where It Works
What Determines the Price of Designer Wallpaper
Quoted per wall rather than per roll alone, because two designs at the same roll price can cover the same wall for different money. The drivers:
- Range and material — the biggest factor. Domestic vinyl at one end; imported non-woven, fabric-backed and metallic ranges at the other
- Pattern repeat and match type — a large offset repeat needs more rolls for the same wall. This is the cost people never anticipate
- Wall area and shape — windows and doors create offcuts you still pay for
- Wall preparation — filling, sanding, priming. On a poor wall this can exceed the wallpaper cost, and skipping it is visible through the finished paper
- Installation — pattern matching, metallic and textured papers all take longer and are less forgiving than a plain
- Height and access — stairwells and double-height walls need equipment
- Stripping old wallpaper — quoted separately, and it varies hugely with how the last one was fitted

Roll sizes, backings, pattern repeats and washability grades described here are the options commonly available in the Indian market and are general guidance, not a stock list or quotation. Quantities depend on wall dimensions, roll size and pattern repeat and should be calculated per wall. Adhesion and longevity depend on the condition of the wall, particularly dryness and the age and quality of existing paint, which can only be assessed on site.
