Acrylic — PMMA, also sold as Plexiglass or Perspex — is the sheet you choose when the material will be looked at. It transmits more light than glass, weighs about half as much, does not shatter into sharp shards, and takes a polished edge that looks finished without a frame. It is also softer than glass, so it scratches more easily; that single trade-off decides most acrylic-versus-glass decisions.

Choosing the Right Thickness

Span matters as much as thickness. A thin sheet fully supported in a frame is fine; the same sheet spanning a metre unsupported will bow. Tell us the unsupported span and whether the panel is vertical or horizontal, and we will recommend a thickness that will not sag.

Acrylic vs Glass, Briefly

Weight: acrylic is roughly half of glass — easier to handle, lighter fixings, safer overhead.
Safety: it does not shatter into sharp shards, which is why it is preferred in public and child-accessible areas.
Clarity: excellent, and clear grades transmit light very well.
Scratching: the real trade-off — acrylic is softer, so abrasive cleaning marks it. Use a soft cloth and mild soapy water, never a scouring pad or solvent-based cleaner.

Do not clean acrylic with glass cleaner. Ammonia-based and alcohol-based cleaners attack the surface and cause fine crazing that cannot be polished out. Mild soap and water on a soft cloth is all it needs.

What Determines the Price of acrylic sheet

We do not publish a rate card for acrylic sheet, because a single per-sq-ft figure would be misleading — the same material can differ several-fold in price depending on the specification. These are the factors that actually move the number, so you can see where your own cost is going and where there is room to save:

Thickness — the biggest single factor — a 12 mm sheet is several times the cost of 3 mm
Cast or extruded — cast costs more; specify it for routing, engraving and thick work, and use extruded where the sheet is simply cut and installed
Colour & finish — clear and opal white are the value options; mirror, frosted, textured and special colours carry a premium
Cutting & wastage — sizes that nest neatly into a full sheet cost less per usable sq ft than an awkward list that leaves large offcuts
Edge finish — a plain saw cut is cheapest; flame or diamond polished edges add labour
Quantity — full sheets and repeat volumes price better than one-off pieces

Getting an accurate figure quickly: send the material, thickness, finished sizes and quantity, and say what the sheet has to do. That is enough to quote firmly. Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of acrylic sheet do I need?

2–3 mm for sign faces and light panels; 4–6 mm for displays, shelves and small partitions; 8–12 mm for glazing, larger partitions and load-bearing shelves; 15–25 mm for structural and premium fabrication. Unsupported span matters as much as application — a small framed panel can be thin, the same material spanning a metre unsupported cannot.

What sheet sizes does acrylic come in?

Common full sheets are 4x6 ft, 4x8 ft and 6x8 ft, with larger sheets up to roughly 2050 x 3050 mm in some grades. Full sheets are awkward to transport and often will not fit a lift or staircase, so most orders go out cut to size. Send your cutting list and we will tell you which works out cheaper.

Is acrylic sheet better than glass?

Depends on what matters. Acrylic is about half the weight, far more impact resistant, and does not shatter into sharp shards — safer overhead and in public areas. Glass is much harder and more scratch resistant and stays clear for decades with no care. For signage, displays and safety glazing acrylic usually wins; for a surface cleaned aggressively every day, glass often does.

Does acrylic sheet yellow in sunlight?

Good quality acrylic is inherently UV stable and holds clarity outdoors for years — it is a standard signage material. Cheap, low-grade or heavily recycled sheet can yellow or go cloudy. If the application is outdoors and permanent, say so when ordering so an appropriate grade is supplied.

Can acrylic sheet be bent or curved?

Yes — it is thermoplastic, so it can be heated and formed into curves and shaped pieces, which is how curved displays and light covers are made. It also laser cuts, routes, drills and solvent bonds for boxes and enclosures. Thicker sheet needs slower, more even heating to avoid bubbling and stress marks.

How much do acrylic sheet cost?

We quote per job rather than publishing a rate card, because the specification changes the price several-fold. The main drivers are material and grade, thickness, size and wastage, finish, and quantity. What is the minimum order quantity?

For stocked materials we can supply from a single cut piece upward, so there is no barrier to a small job. Non-stocked, imported or specially sourced grades usually carry a minimum set by the manufacturer, often a full sheet or a pack, plus a lead time. We will tell you the minimum and the lead time before you commit rather than after, and will say if a stocked alternative would do the same job sooner and cheaper.
