The most useful thing you can tell us is not the material name but the duty. What does the sheet have to survive — which chemical, what temperature, what impact, indoors or out, how long? Roofing & Daylighting
The most common industrial enquiry we get is not a full roof — it is replacing a handful of metal sheets with translucent panels so a shed can run with the lights off during daylight hours. It is a small job with a payback measured in electricity bills.
- Profile matching is the whole job. Send a photo of the existing sheet with the crest-to-crest measurement and sheet depth, and we will confirm the matching profile before you order — mismatched profiles leak at the overlap
- FRP is the economical choice for industrial roofs and daylight strips; polycarbonate costs more but resists hail and footfall far better and holds light transmission longer
- UV face must go outward on polycarbonate — a sheet fitted upside down yellows and turns brittle years early
- Fix at the crest with washered screws and oversize the holes for thermal movement
Roof work is work at height. Never walk directly on FRP or polycarbonate sheets — use crawl boards spanning the purlins. Where we install on a live factory roof, it is done to a safe access arrangement with proper equipment, and we will tell you if a roof needs scaffolding or a platform rather than improvising. A cheap quote that ignores access is quoting an unsafe job.

Getting the Specification Right First Time
- State the duty, not the material. Chemical, temperature, impact, abrasion, food contact, voltage, indoor or outdoor, and expected service life.
- Say how it will be joined. HDPE and PP cannot be reliably glued and must be welded; ABS, PVC and acrylic bond with solvent cement. Designs that assume gluing fail on the wrong polymer.
- Confirm certification needs upfront. Food-contact, flame-retardant and electrical insulating applications need a specific certified grade with documentation — not a general industrial equivalent.
- Send sizes as a cutting list. Cut to size reduces wastage and makes transport far easier, particularly for full sheets that will not fit a lift or a narrow gate.
- Ask about substitutes. A specially sourced sheet carries a minimum order and a lead time; a stocked material may do the same job this week for less.
Certified grades are not interchangeable with lookalikes. Electrical insulating matting must be tested and certified for the working voltage; food-contact sheet must be the certified grade, not simply the right polymer. Ordinary material of the same thickness and appearance is not equivalent. Tell us the requirement and we will supply a certified product with its documentation, or tell you plainly that we cannot.

What Determines the Price of Industrial Sheet Supply
Quoted per requirement. The drivers:
- Material — the largest factor by far; engineering plastics such as PTFE, POM and nylon cost multiples of commodity HDPE, PP and FRP
- Thickness — priced largely by material volume, so thick plate rises steeply
- Certified grade — food-contact, flame-retardant, UV-stabilised and electrical grades cost more, and the certification is part of the value
- Quantity — the main lever; industrial volumes price very differently from single cut pieces, and repeat supply arrangements better again
- Cutting and fabrication — a plain cut is cheapest; machined, welded, routed or die-cut items are quoted as fabrication
- Profile availability on roofing — standard profiles are the value option, unusual ones may need a special run
- Access and installation — roof work needs safe access, which is a real cost and not one to strip out of a quote
- Lead time — stocked materials ship quickly, sourced and imported grades carry minimums and delay
Where industrial buyers overspend: specifying a premium polymer for a duty a commodity grade handles — usually because the original drawing named a material rather than a requirement. Where they underspend: on the wrong rubber polymer for gaskets, which then fail early and cost more in downtime than the material ever saved.

Polycarbonate costs more but is far more impact resistant against hail and footfall and holds its light transmission much longer, making it the better long-term choice on a roof you expect to keep. On polycarbonate, the UV-protected face must be installed outward - a sheet fitted upside down yellows and turns brittle years early.
Which sheet material should I use for a machine guard?
Polycarbonate, not acrylic. Acrylic is clearer and glossier but brittle, and it cracks when drilled near an edge or struck. Polycarbonate takes impact by flexing rather than shattering and can be drilled close to an edge, which is why it is the standard for guarding and inspection windows. Choose acrylic only where optical clarity matters more than impact resistance and the panel is protected from knocks.
Which material should line a chemical tank?
HDPE or PP in most cases, chosen by the specific chemical and temperature - PP handles higher temperatures and a wider range of acids, HDPE is tougher at low temperature with better impact resistance. Both are weldable, so joints are sealed rather than glued, which matters because neither bonds reliably with adhesive. Tell us the chemical, concentration and temperature rather than just asking for a plastic liner.
Can you supply certified food-grade and electrical insulating sheets?
Where a certified grade is required we supply it with its documentation. The important point is that certification comes from the specific grade, not the polymer family - ordinary HDPE is not automatically food safe, and ordinary black rubber sheet is not equivalent to certified electrical insulating matting for a working voltage, however similar it looks. State the requirement and we will supply a certified product or tell you plainly that we cannot.
Do you offer bulk and repeat industrial supply?
Yes - rate arrangements and scheduled repeat deliveries can be arranged for consumable items such as matting, gaskets and packaging materials, which is usually more economical than ordering ad hoc. Sheets can be supplied full size or cut to your cutting list, whichever works out cheaper including transport. GST invoice on all supply, and PO-based ordering can be arranged.
