Tarpaulin is bought on two numbers and one question. The numbers are GSM, which tells you how much material is in it and therefore how long it will last, and the size. The question is whether it is UV stabilised — because an untreated tarpaulin in Indian sun goes chalky and brittle within a season or two regardless of how heavy it felt when you bought it.

The cheapest tarpaulin is almost always the false economy. A low-GSM untreated sheet on a truck or a site looks identical on day one and is torn or brittle within months, so you buy it three times. If it will sit in the sun, specify a UV-stabilised grade and adequate GSM — and get the GSM stated on the invoice, because it is the number most easily misrepresented in this trade.

Getting Longer Life From a Tarpaulin
- Tie down through the eyelets, not over the middle. Rope pressure across an unsupported span is what tears a tarpaulin first
- Avoid pooling water. Standing water is heavy and stretches the sheet; give it a slope or a ridge so water runs off
- Do not drag it over rough material — abrasion against aggregate and brick edges wears through the lamination
- Dry before folding for storage. Folding it damp encourages mildew on the underside even on a rot-resistant sheet
- Repair small tears immediately with tape or a patch. A small tear under wind load becomes a large one in a single storm
- Store out of direct sun when not in use — UV degradation continues whether it is covering something or lying in a yard

- GSM — the dominant factor; you are buying material weight per square metre

- Material — HDPE woven laminated is the value standard; canvas and specialist grades cost more

Compare on GSM, not on price per sheet. Two tarpaulins of the same size can differ by half in weight, and the lighter one will not last a season on a truck. Ask for the GSM in writing before comparing quotes, and the cheap ones usually explain themselves.
