VCI paper is the cheapest insurance in a metal-parts despatch, and the most commonly misused. It is not a barrier wrap — it is a chemical that has to be held in a closed air space to work at all. Get two things right and it is close to foolproof: the correct grade for the metal, and a sealed enclosure. Get either wrong and you have paid for paper that does nothing, which is why parts still arrive rusted in packaging that looked perfectly adequate.

What VCI Actually Does

The paper carries a corrosion inhibitor that vaporises steadily at ordinary temperatures. Inside a closed package that vapour saturates the air, then adsorbs onto every exposed metal surface as a molecular film. That film interrupts the electrochemical reaction between iron, oxygen and moisture that produces rust.

Two consequences matter in practice. First, protection reaches surfaces the paper never touches — internal bores, threaded holes, the underside of a stacked component — which is why VCI beats oiling for complex parts. Second, it needs the enclosure. There is nothing to see, nothing to wipe off, and no way to tell by eye whether it is working, so process discipline substitutes for inspection.

The enclosure rule. VCI in an open crate, a vented carton or a loose fold does almost nothing. The inhibitor vapour has to be contained to hold its concentration. If the package cannot be closed, VCI paper is the wrong product and you want a coating or a barrier film instead. This single mistake accounts for most VCI failures we are asked about.

Which Grade for Which Metal

This is the part most supplier listings skip, and it is where the money is lost. VCI is not one chemistry. A grade formulated for steel is not automatically safe on brass.

Ferrous grade

For iron, mild steel, cast iron and most carbon steels. The commonest requirement — machined components, fasteners, stampings, tooling, castings. Do not assume it is safe on yellow metals.

Non-ferrous grade

For copper, brass, bronze and other yellow metals, and for aluminium and zinc. Uses a different inhibitor system. A ferrous grade used here can stain or discolour the surface.

Multimetal grade

For mixed assemblies — a steel housing with brass fittings, or a crate holding several metals. Costs more per square metre than single-metal grades, and removes the sorting problem.

Tell us the metal, not the part. "Machined components" does not identify a grade. "EN8 steel spindles, no brass in the crate" does. If any yellow metal shares the enclosure, say so — that decides between a ferrous grade and a multimetal grade, and it is the most frequent cause of a wrong supply.

Paper, Film or Emitter?

FormBest suited toNotes
VCI kraft paperMachined parts, bearings, tooling, interleaving stacked componentsKraft absorbs residual surface oil instead of trapping it against the metal. Easiest to cut, fold and interleave.
Poly / HDPE laminated VCI paperLonger storage, humid conditions, oily or heavy partsAdds a moisture and oil barrier. Paper side faces the metal, coated side faces out.
VCI film & bagsLarger assemblies, pallet loads, parts that must stay visibleSeals more reliably for long storage and doubles as the moisture barrier. Often used as the outer layer over VCI paper.
VCI emitters & capsulesEnclosed cabinets, control panels, tool chests, sealed containersNo wrapping involved — the device supplies vapour to a fixed enclosed volume. Sized by the volume it has to protect.

How to Apply It

  1. Clean and dry the part. VCI protects bare metal — it does not displace water or lift existing rust. Anything already corroding will keep corroding under the wrap.
  2. Wrap close. The inhibitor works over a short distance, so a tight wrap outperforms paper laid loosely in the carton. Interleave sheets between stacked components.
  3. Paper side against the metal for laminated grades. For plain kraft, either side.
  4. Seal the enclosure. Tape the carton, close the bag, or use a VCI film outer. This is the step that decides success.
  5. Keep other papers out. Ordinary acidic kraft, some cardboards and certain plastics work against the inhibitor inside a sealed space.
  6. Put cushioning outside the VCI, not between it and the part — foam or bubble goes on after the VCI wrap, never underneath it.
Storage matters as much as specification. A reel left open on the shop floor loses inhibitor to the room. Keep stock in its original sealed wrapping, in the shade, and draw from one reel at a time. Buying six months of VCI to save on rate and then storing it badly is a false economy — order against consumption instead.

Frequently Asked

What is VCI paper and how does it stop rust?
VCI stands for Vapour Corrosion Inhibitor. The paper is impregnated with a chemical that slowly vaporises at normal temperatures, fills the air space inside the package and settles as an extremely thin protective layer on the metal surface. That layer interrupts the electrochemical reaction that produces rust. Because it works through the vapour, it reaches recesses, threads and bores that no coating applied by hand would cover, and it leaves nothing to wash off before the part is used.
Why did my VCI paper fail to protect the parts?
Almost always because the package was not closed. VCI depends on holding a vapour concentration in a confined space, so an open crate, a vented carton or a loosely folded wrap lets the inhibitor escape and the protection disappears. The other common causes are the wrong grade for the metal, paper stored unwrapped for months before use so the inhibitor had already gone, and mixing VCI paper with ordinary acidic kraft or cardboard that works against it. Seal the package, use the paper soon after opening the reel, and keep other papers out of the enclosure.
Can I use the same VCI paper for steel and for copper?
Not unless it is specifically a multimetal grade. Ferrous grades are formulated for iron and steel; copper, brass and other yellow metals need a different inhibitor chemistry, and using a ferrous grade on them can stain or discolour the surface. If you pack mixed assemblies - a steel housing with brass fittings, for example - ask for a multimetal grade rather than assuming one paper covers everything. State the metals when you order and we will match the grade.
How long does VCI paper protect for?
In a properly sealed package the usual working expectation is several months to around two years, depending on the grade, how much paper surface is enclosed relative to the air volume, and the storage conditions. Heat, humidity swings and repeated opening all shorten it. Sea freight and monsoon storage are the hard cases and need a heavier grade or a laminated construction. Ask for the specific protection period of the grade quoted rather than relying on a general figure.
Which side of VCI paper faces the metal?
For plain kraft VCI, both sides carry the inhibitor and either can face the part. For poly-laminated or HDPE-laminated VCI, the paper side faces the metal and the coated side faces out, because the coating is there to keep moisture and oil out of the package rather than to release inhibitor inwards. Wrap close to the part - VCI works over a short distance, so a tight wrap protects far better than paper loosely laid in the box.
Should I use VCI paper or VCI film?
Paper suits machined parts, tooling, bearings and anything with oil on it, because kraft absorbs surface oil and will not trap it against the metal, and it is easier to interleave between stacked components. Film suits larger assemblies, pallet loads and anything that also needs a moisture barrier or needs to stay visible, and it seals more reliably for long storage. Many plants use both - paper against the part, film as the outer sealed layer.
Do you supply VCI paper outside Delhi NCR?
Yes. Unlike bubble sheet and foam, VCI paper is dense and high in value for its volume, so courier and transport to other states is economic rather than prohibitive. We deliver directly across Faridabad, Ballabgarh, IMT Faridabad, Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad, and dispatch elsewhere in India by surface transport. Give the metal, the part size and your monthly consumption and we will quote delivered.

Packing Metal Parts Every Week?

Tell us the metal, the part size and how the package is closed. We'll match the grade, work out the paper area you actually need per pack, and quote current rates with scheduled supply.

Grades, grammages, roll widths and protection periods described here are the options commonly available in the Indian market and are general guidance, not a stock list or a quotation. Corrosion protection performance depends on the specific certified grade supplied, on the metal, and on whether the package is genuinely sealed — it is not implied by paper colour, grammage or price. Confirm the grade, its metal coverage and its stated protection period against your own transit and storage conditions before committing to a packing standard. VCI paper rates track kraft and inhibitor input costs and move through the year, so current rates are quoted on enquiry.
